Debussy’s 150th Birthday at WMP Concert Hall, NYC

I will play a special concert, show videos while I play some pieces, and premiere a new version of my Debussy film, “The World Will Change in His Sound” Wednesday August 22nd at 7:30PM in New York City at WMP Concert Hall. I will shoot new footage of the French coast and St Sebastian in Spain, where Debussy made a day trip and found great inspiration.

I am busy preparing for my upcoming recitals in Austin, Switzerland, and TAMIU Laredo. I will play 3 Scarlatti Sonatas, the c minor Mozart Fantasy K457, the Prokofiev 3rd Sonata, a Debussy set, and the Argentine Dances of Ginastera.

Debussy CD and Sesquicentennial!

December 28-29 I will record a Debussy CD outside Zurich! I am very excited.

G.Henle publishers will show part of the Debussy Film in their booth at the Frankfurt Musik Messe March 21-24, I am very pleased they are interested in the film!

I will also present the Debussy film and a lecture with noted Debussy scholar Paul Roberts during the Brown Symposium at Southwestern University in Georgetown TX June 1st.

I am preparing for my two violin-piano concerts with Maurits Bosman:

We will perform the D major Beethoven Sonata, Frates by Arvo Pärt, the c minor Grieg Sonata, and the Debussy Sonata.

I am also preparing for my presentation at the European Piano Teachers Conference in EPTA Netherlands, Nunspeet, Netherlands. I will talk about visual and inspirational aspects of some piano works of Claude Debussy.

March Recitals and Photobooks!

Austin has had almost 50 days over 100 degrees. It is hard to do things!

But I am very pleased that my fall piano and violin program is moving forward and I have chosen a partial program for my newly booked March solo piano recitals in Switzerland! I am pleased both Kulturplatz Wetzikon and KulturKreis Arosa have invited me to perform during the week of March 11-18. I will play the Mozart a minor Sonata and the Prokofiev 7th Sonata among other works TBD. I am very excited to be able to return and perform in Switzerland.

For the first time I am ordering prints of my photos. As part of the process I made several photo books. Two of them are available for purchase. I hope you enjoy the preview links even if you do not buy!

Finally, an update!

It has been a busy year. Last November I returned for a tour in the Netherlands, traveled to Switzerland over New Years, and performed in Austin. March my Tokyo trip was cancelled by American Airlines since my flight was due to leave 12 hours after the devastating earthquake. The teaching year at Regents School of Austin ended with a nice recital May 21st.

I returned last week from a solo Swiss tour which included Kulturplatz Wetzikon, Kulturkreis Arosa, and Jazz Club Uster. The performances went well and I have been invited to return. I posted 3 videos from Wetzikon below.

November 2011 I will perform at Bronlaak with a violinist friend who was concertmaster in Rotterdam. I am very pleased I was invited to present a lecture demonstration with video about the visual aspects of Debussy at the EPTA Netherlands nation conference November 19th in Nunspeet. I believe this lecture can be the basis for the next Debussy film.

August 2010 Update

I am developing a website, documentary film, and lecture recital about the role of light, sense of place, and visual stimuli in Claude Debussy’s piano works.

September 2010 I will return to Paris for more shooting and to Heiligenberg Germany to interview Manfred Bleffert. I am working on a new cut of the film that preserves aspects of the original cut including interviews of Roy Howat, Manfred Bleffert, Elliott Antokoletz, and Austin Symphony Conductor Peter Bay’s discussion and demonstration of elements of Impressionism in La Mer . The film is moving forward and I will also make a version that is purely narrative with no interviews. This version may be the most important.

October 30th at 7:30PM at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, TX I will perform Debussy pieces with video and will show a cut of my Debussy Film “The World Will Change in His Sound”. October 14th at Noon I will perform at Central Presbyterian Church in Austin, TX with Chaparral Eurythmy. March 10th 2011 I will also perform at Central Presbyterian and will do a solo recital at Steinway Piano Gallery of Austin Saturday March 5th, 2011.

November 2010 I will return to The Netherlands for a 2 week tour with speaker and cello with works including the Beethoven Cello Sonata Opus 69, Arvo Pärt’s Fratres for Cello and Piano, and works by Debussy, Anthony Tobin, and Imke Jelle van Dam.

During July 2010 I toured the Netherlands and conducted a workshop in the Hague. I received a grant from the Iona Stichting for this project to perform a solo program including Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Debussy, Ginastera, and Dutch Composer Imke Jelle van Dam, and work with eurythmists, a speaker, and musicians on subsequent tours. I strengthened my connection with eurythmists Emilie van der Held, Elisabeth Appenrodt, and Martje Brandsma.

During January/February 2010 I performed Debussy’s four-hand work 6 Epigraphes antiques with Kiyoshi Tamagawa at Southwestern University as part of The Bilitis Project I also continued my work with Chaparral Eurythmy and performed with Margrethe Solstad, leader of the Goetheanum Stage Group.
